Day 22 - Marathon - Rest Day
Today is a rest day. Some folk went to Big Bend National Park. We chose to stay here because of the 2-hour drive each way. We will see it another time.
Here are a few sights from our experience here.
Our campground hosts a star gazer club. We had a star gazing event last evening. Their work is impressive. Here are a few of their “scopes”.
Nearby is a famous hotel - The Gage Hotel. This is a sculpture on an external wall.
I have been working to replace my bicycle helmet ever since I went off the road. Even in El Paso I was not able to purchase an equivalent helmet. Five El Paso bike shops said that they would have to special order it for me. Of course that would be too late for me. So I turned to Amazon. The problem with Amazon is that next day in rural New Mexico and Texas is really a week. The husband of a friend was staying at the RV park we would be at in about a week and agreed to have a helmet shipped to him at the park. What no one knew was that he would have to pick it up in person and the post office closes at 1:00 p.m. I checked the post office and there are no signs describing this.
The helmet arrived at the post office on Monday and he was finally able to pick it up on Thursday. The same day we arrived. Success!!!
Here I am with my new helmet. It fits!!! I am holding the old one. You can see the dings where the helmet absorbed the shock of the rocks, etc., that I hit. I have always been a firm believer in bike helmets. Now I am even more so!
I am thankful for the borrowed helmet I used. I am even more thankful for my own. Any ideas for a useless bike helmet?
Because this is a rest day there was time to discuss important questions. Today’s question was, “How do we to define EFI (Every Fabulous Inch)?” For example, when a day is canceled due to wind can we count those inches/miles?
Bottom Line: After a few beers, the group decided to count those miles towards the EFI count. 😃
Because I lost a few days of riding after my accident, I am now reporting my miles and the C2C (Coast-to-Coast) miles. So the current count is:

Kathy and I have stayed at the Gage Hotel. We have driven on many of your routes in Texas. Lots of history of the westward settlement of the country. Marfa had a nice downtown. Steve and Kathy
ReplyDeleteThe old helmet certainly does tell the story!
